Building the Network From the Ground Up

RNRC is a new cooperative and is currently developing its initial repeater sites. The network is being planned around actual communications needs, predicted RF coverage, available infrastructure, technical feasibility, and responsible use of member resources.

Initial Site Development

RNRC does not currently have an operational repeater site.

The Cooperative's first potential site is currently in pre-planning while RNRC performs the work necessary to determine whether the location can be developed into an operational repeater site.

As repeater sites are developed, this map will show predicted RNRC coverage and provide a geographic view of the developing network.

About Coverage Predictions

Radio coverage maps and propagation models are planning tools, not guarantees of service. Actual radio performance can vary based on terrain, antenna height and location, subscriber equipment, buildings, vegetation, vehicles, interference, installation quality, environmental conditions, and other factors.

RNRC may use field testing and operational experience to compare predicted coverage with actual system performance as the network develops.

Understanding Site Status

Pre-Planning

RNRC is performing due diligence, coverage analysis, evaluating site feasibility, preparing applications, identifying infrastructure needs, or completing other preliminary work necessary to determine whether the site should move forward.

Planning & Install

RNRC has the information and approvals needed to move forward. The site may be undergoing final planning, procurement, construction, equipment configuration, or installation.

Up

The repeater site has been installed and is operating normally as part of the RNRC network.

Degraded

The repeater site is installed and operating, but a known issue or reduced capability may affect normal service.

Down

The repeater site has been installed but is currently unavailable or is not operating normally.

How RNRC Plans Coverage

Good repeater coverage starts with understanding where communications are actually needed. RNRC combines member requirements, RF modeling, site evaluation, and field testing when developing the network.

Identify the Need

Members and prospective members tell RNRC where they operate, what areas are important to them, and what type of radio communications they expect to use.

Model Coverage

RNRC uses terrain-based radio propagation modeling to evaluate how potential repeater locations may serve requested areas.

Evaluate Sites

Potential sites are evaluated for coverage benefit, tower and antenna options, power, backhaul, access, reliability, cost, licensing, and other technical requirements.

Build & Validate

As sites are deployed, predicted coverage can be compared with field observations and testing to better understand actual system performance.

The Radio Matters Too

A repeater site's coverage is only half of the radio path. Subscriber equipment, antenna location, terrain, and the surrounding environment also affect whether a radio can reliably communicate with the site.

Handheld Radios

Handheld radios are portable and convenient, but they normally operate at lower power and use smaller antennas. Terrain, buildings, vehicles, and the user's position can significantly affect performance.

Vehicle Mobile Radios

Vehicle-mounted radios generally benefit from higher transmit power and an exterior antenna. In many rural applications, this can provide better performance than a handheld radio.

Fixed & Base Radios

Fixed radios can perform very well when paired with an appropriately installed outdoor antenna. Antenna height, feedline, terrain, and site location can make a substantial difference.

Your Coverage Request Helps Shape the Network

RNRC does not intend to place repeaters simply to create the largest possible colored area on a map. The goal is to build useful communications infrastructure where members actually need it.

A coverage request does not guarantee that RNRC will construct a repeater serving a particular location. It does, however, provide useful information when comparing potential sites, evaluating new membership, and planning future infrastructure.

Where Do You Need Coverage?

Tell us about the area where you need communications. You do not need to know which repeater site would serve you — that's part of what RNRC evaluates.

A community, valley, ranch, highway corridor, operating area, or other general description is fine.

A coverage request is used for planning and evaluation. It does not create a membership obligation or guarantee construction of a repeater site.

Coverage needs and repeater locations go hand in hand. If you own, manage, or have access to an elevated site, tower, communications facility, ranch property, or other location that could improve rural coverage, RNRC would like to hear about it.
